Alex Walsh
Göteborg
Alexandra Walsh, is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Gothenburg, Sweden. She works primarily in watercolor painting but is also known for her drawing, digital drawing, collage, and performance art. Walsh is best known for her expressionistic, monochrome watercolor paintings on paper and glass, executed with a single, often heavily granulating pigment. Her artistic practice also includes monotyping, ink, and pencil drawings, as well as collages made from recycled watercolor paintings. Her work draws inspiration from abstract movements, particularly biomorphism, and Japanese visual aesthetics, with a focus on landscape and tree portraits that vary in their degree of abstraction.
The subject matter of Alexandra Walsh's work is deeply rooted in metaphysical explorations of knowledge and the perception of reality. She frequently uses nature, specifically trees and landscapes, as allegories for knowledge and as entities with their own agency capable of shaping reality. Her art reflects a philosophical inquiry into how we rely on our perceptions and what we consider as knowledge. Walsh's interdisciplinary approach is notable, as she integrates insights from chemistry and physics into her watercolor practice, challenging and reinventing traditional techniques. Her participation in the artist performance project "Kill the Info Noise" in 2023 was pivotal, helping her to crystallize her focus on reducing informational and perceptual noise, which now defines her current thematic exploration.
Alexandra Walsh has exhibited her work in several prestigious venues, including the Röhsska Museum of Design in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2023, and the ECWS International Watercolour Exhibition in Tampere, Finland, in 2024. Her work has been collected by various private national and international collections. In 2022, she participated in the 7th Fabriano International Watercolor Biennial Prize in Fabriano, Italy, further establishing her reputation in the global art community.
