Hydra Blues - Morning skies in the blues, 2019

50 x 70 cm

Under the Hydra sun, cerulean waves me embrace
I see the colour blue, a hue that knows my place
The sea's sparkling surface, the sky's clear Blue
Carries memories of then that I cannot pursue

Blue as the sky's highest height
Blue as the depths where dreams are born and fade
The beauty in Blue, the eternal delight
But its sorrow, I bear like a delicate shade

The big blue boat, once strong and true
Layed as a breakwater when Zephyrus blew
Now it's gone, and only the grey quay remains
Where we stood and listened to the sea's refrains

Blue skies, blue doors and blue windows that gaze
At a lovely blue-eyed girl's musing face
Her eyes reflected dreams of Hydra's old
In the blue hour, where stories were told

So I sing my blues, about the colour blue
Hydra, my beloved, your heart is mine
For the beauty and sorrow, like none ever knew
To capture, as you do, in a heavenly sign

Blue as Love's never-ending song
Blue as the tears slowly flowing down
Hydra Blues, a yearning so long
In your blue embrace, I wish to drown

And when night falls, and silence ensues
I'll whisper, "That's the meaning of Hydra Blues."

Looking back at the past year on the first day of the new could quickly get you into the blues. Turning your eyes ahead could, with a positive mind, turn your senses back to the bright blue side of the window.

The sky and sea are blue and surround Hydra. Surveys show that blue is the colour most associated with harmony, faithfulness, confidence, distance, infinity, and imagination—but it is also cold and occasionally associated with sadness. Being sad or suffering from depression is often referred to as being in the blues.

That said, it is far from true suggesting that if it rains on Hydra, you become depressed. On the contrary, you will be happy when it rains after weeks or months of sun and drought, even if all water seems to be coming simultaneously, making the streets wild currents.

It can, of course, be a rainy day in winter, and the reality becomes bluer. Some claim that it depends on what side of the window you are in. From the inside, you see the truth from the bright side. On the other, you get wet and maybe a little bit blue.

Hydra Blues can be a melancholic rebetiko played at Douskos in October. Rebetiko is often called the Blues of Greece.

Blues is a music genre that originated in the Deep South of the United States around the 1860s. It often sounds melancholic and is, therefore, considered metaphorically blue.

'The Blues Brothers' is one of my favourite films. The comedians Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi don't make the film particularly sad; however, it is a hilarious movie full of music and gags. They sang:

I said Woman, you going to walk a mile for a Camel,
or are you going to make like Mr Chesterfield and satisfy?
She said it all depends on what you're packing,
regular or king-size.
Then she pulled out my Jim Beam, and to her surprise
It was every bit as hard as my Canadian Club.

The last name Blues is most widespread in Scotland, with 236 people bearing it. Dalriada's ancient Scottish kingdom is considered the origin of the Blues family. The name Blues may derive from the Gaelic word 'gorm,' meaning Blue.

Gorm was the ruler of Denmark, reigning from c. 936 to his death in 958. He is said to have died in the blues, mourning his son's Canute death. Gorm's other son, Harold Bluetooth - (Old Norse: Haraldr Blátǫnn Gormsson - ruled Denmark and Norway and turned the Danes to Christianity, and Oden, the god of the Vikings, went into the historic blues.

Blue is one of the three primary colours and has influenced art and decoration since ancient times. The semi-precious deep-blue stone lapis lazuli was used in ancient Egypt for jewellery. Later, in the Renaissance, they made ultramarine, the most expensive pigment, from it. No wonder poor people who loved Blue went into the blues.

In 1665, he painted 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'; the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer used a lot of Lapis lazuli-based Blue. The painting disappeared into the Blue for 200 years. Some say that it was due to the immorality hidden in the picture. The girl's slightly opened lips moved people's sexual fantasies.

A collector bought it in 1884 at an auction for 2 guilders, which, in today's money, would be a bargain of 30€. When he died, the restored painting was donated to the Mauritshuis. If on the market, the value would exceed 200 million euros, proving the colour blue's true value.

Your skin turns bluish if you freeze, maybe mirroring your feelings. Blue-pigmented animals are relatively rare. Butterflies, fish, the monkey Mandrill's nose, and poisonous frogs. Ghosts can be blue, people say, having seen them. Blue eyes do not contain any blue pigment. What you see is the scattering of light.

The term 'Blue' was relatively rare in ancient literature. Ancient Greek poets described the sea as green, brown, or the colour of wine. The latter could probably be explained by having gotten too much of the red stimulant.

So, winter or summer, spring and fall – look out the window and see the beauty in Blue. Listen to the lines from the Monty Python film 'Life of Brian', and the crowd singing when Brian hangs on the cross.

Some things in life are bad.
They can really make you mad.
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble; give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best
And
Always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the light side of life
I would add "Always look on the Blue side of life" to the song, especially if the Blue is on Hydra.

I miss you, Lady Blue, once an old blue ship who floated in the harbour, occasionally swinging her boom to unload sand and cement for the island's builders. Like an extra breakwater, you lay there securely, calming the sea when the wind god Zephyrus stormed his worst. Now you are gone, with you, yet another piece of the old Hydra we loved. Back then, the boats cost 9 euros and took an hour from Piraeus, and we could take the big ferry to Ermioni for a lunch trip before slowly sailing back. I'm feeling blue.

Lite om bilder och mig. Translation in English at the end.

A bit about pictures and me.

I'm a curious person who sees everything in pictures, even what I express in words, often combining them, for behind all my pictures lies a story. These narratives, some as short as a single image and others as long as a novel, are the heart and soul of my work.

Pictures tell stories. Wherever I go, I'm surrounded by natural beauty, exciting people, and history. I use my camera to document the world and blend what I see with what I feel to capture the hidden magic.
My images tell my stories. Through my pictures, prints, and narratives, I invite you to partake in these stories in your life and home and share my deeply personal perspective of our world. More than meets the eye. I think in pictures, dream, write, and talk about them; consequently, I must create images too. They become what I see, not necessarily confined to reality. There's a picture around every corner. I hope you'll see what I saw and enjoy it.

I'm also a writer, and many images come with a shorter or longer essay. It accompanies the painting, printed on fine paper with my personal greeting.

Many pictures start their journey on my camera. Simply put, I describe the image I see in my mind, experienced or imagined. The image arises within me even before I bring the eyepiece to my eye. In a fraction of a moment, I see what I want and what can be done with the picture. Here, I'll insert a giraffe, Superman, the Titanic, or whatever my imagination conjures up. Even stranger is that I remember the mental image long after it's time to create the work. Whether I succeed is up to the observer, often imbued with a streak of black humour – the aim is to entertain. My pictures usually become a talking point wherever they hang.

I prefer pictures that convey a message in multiple layers. At first glance, they're filled with feel-good vibes, a beautiful view, lovely weather, the sun shining, flowers in the meadow, or the water lying deceptively calm. But beneath this surface beauty, I often conceal a deeper story, a narrative that challenges societal norms or explores the human condition. I invite you to delve into these hidden narratives and discover the layers of meaning within my work.

Picture and design have been a thread running through my life. Photographic art feels like a fitting finale, and I'm happy to share it.
My genre is varied, as seen in my pictures; the theme is a blend of pop and street art in collages that can consist of hundreds of layers. Some images can take weeks, others just a day before it's time to hand over the result to the print workshop. Fine Art Prints are digital photo collages. In these collages, tearing, cutting, puzzling, painting, drawing, and spraying happen digitally. What I insert can be images hundreds of years old that I carefully extract so they appear to be part of the painting, but also images created by myself, now also generated from my imagination. Next, visit the print studio and, for certain images, number a limited edition (usually 7 copies) and sign them by hand. Some images may be available in other formats. Just ask which ones. If you like an image that's 70x100 but doesn't have space on the wall, you might be able to get it in 50x70 cm instead. The question is open.

The Giclée method, or Fine Art Print as it's also called, is the modern way of producing graphic art. This method ensures the highest quality and longevity of the artwork, using a high-quality large-format printer with archival pigment inks and artist paper or, in some cases, canvas. The paper used meets the longevity requirements set by museums and galleries. I sell my pictures unframed, allowing the new owner to personalise their artwork, confident in the lasting value and quality of the piece.

For many years, I only exhibited online, in selected groups, and on my Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/jorgen.thornberg.9. I also have my website, which unfortunately is not constantly updated - https://www.jth.life/. You can also read some of the stories accompanying the pictures there.
