Imagine three women stepping into a time capsule and finding themselves in the 1950s, leisurely strolling on the pier leading to Ribersborgs Kallbadhus. By their side, unique companions: two African elephants and two dogs, a poodle and a Jack Russell terrier. This is the magic of Kallis, where even elephants can safely amble along the long pier leading to the bathhouse, a nude beach with separate sections for gentlemen and ladies. Each section houses a wood-fired sauna and a regular sauna, a testament to the extraordinary experience that awaits at Ribersborgs Kallbadhus.
The Ribersborgs Kallbadhus, a living testament to the rich tapestry of history, traces its origins back to the 19th century. In 1867, the cold bathhouse of Malmö Bathhouse Company was nestled on the outskirts of Skeppsbron in the harbour. With the construction of Nyhamnen, the cold bathhouse was relocated to its current spot on Ribersborg Beach in 1898. Today, it stands as the largest, best-preserved, and most visited cold bathhouse in the Nordic region, a beacon of historical and cultural significance that demands our respect and appreciation.
Understanding the regulations on pet ownership in Sweden can be a bit like navigating a maze, a stark contrast to the more lenient rules in many other countries. For instance, in the USA, it's common for people to own monkeys and predators. However, in Sweden, the rules are much stricter. The Swedish Board of Agriculture maintains a comprehensive list of legal and illegal pets, providing a clear guide for potential pet owners.
You can have many animals in your home if you care for them properly. This group includes penguins, giant snails, elephants, badgers, and swans. However, you need a large garden if you buy an elephant and have it at home. But they are brilliant and emotional so you might get a lot of joy from them! The most important thing to know is that the animals you buy must be bred in captivity to be accepted as pets. So you can't go out into the forest and steal a wild badger or smuggle an elephant from the African savannah.
In Victorian England, returning Englishmen often brought exotic animals, which became irritating. The satirical magazine Punch regularly published pictures of funny pets and their owners. My favourite is a lady in a crinoline, dainty hat, and elegant umbrella to protect herself from the sun. In her company, she has a full-grown hippopotamus with a pink bow around its neck and a silk ribbon held by its owner. "Come along, Fido," reads the caption.
The bond between humans and their animal companions is a thread that weaves through the annals of time, spinning tales of loyalty, eccentricity, and unexpected friendships. From the ordinary to the extraordinary, history is adorned with famous pets whose stories captivate and stir the heart.
Josephine Bonaparte, a woman often overshadowed by her husband's towering presence in history, had a flair for the extraordinary regarding her furry entourage. Among them was Fortune, a pug of legendary temperament fiercely protective of Josephine. So much so that even Napoleon found himself on the receiving end of Fortune's wrath, tales of wedding night disruptions and romantic encounters adding a touch of whimsy to the otherwise severe historical narrative.
Then there's the tale of Tycho Brahe, the renowned astronomer whose celestial pursuits were matched only by his penchant for unconventional companionship. Enter the alcoholic moose, a creature of peculiar habits and endearing quirks. Brahe's parties were legendary affairs, with the moose as the star attraction, delighting guests with its antics until tragedy struck in a drunken stumble down castle stairs.
But let's not forget the corridors of power, where even the highest echelons of society found room for unconventional pets. John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States, raised eyebrows with his choice of a White House companion—an alligator! Whether gifted or merely a temporary resident, the gator added a touch of intrigue to the hallowed halls of power.
Meanwhile, Thomas Jefferson, one of America's founding fathers, dared defy convention by keeping not one but two grizzly bear cubs as pets. Despite their initial gentleness, the cubs soon outgrew their enclosures, wreaking havoc on the president's lawn and earning him a dubious reputation among his peers.
And who could forget Lord Byron, the quintessential romantic poet whose menagerie rivalled the ark? Byron's household was a menagerie of wonder and whimsy, from noble steeds to exotic creatures like wolves and falcons.
In Hollywood, Audrey Hepburn's bond with her deer companion, Pippin, captured hearts and imaginations alike. Their partnership was forged on the silver screen and nurtured in quiet moments of companionship.
Of course, Salvador Dalí, the surrealist extraordinaire, whose pet ocelot, Babou, added a whim to his eccentric lifestyle. From strolls through Paris to impromptu curtain-climbing escapades, Babou was a feline enigma, embodying Dalí's irreverent spirit.
Each tale is a testament to the enduring bond between humans and animals, a bond that transcends convention and defies expectation. And as we reflect on these extraordinary companions, we're reminded that sometimes, the most remarkable friendships are found in the most unexpected places.
Let's sprinkle some ancient Egyptian extravagance onto these pet stories.
Behold Queen Isiemkheb, reigning over the sands of time during the 21st dynasty while Pharaoh Pinedjem II held court. Now, this queen wasn't content with any old pet—no, she had a gazelle that was the apple of her eye.
Isiemkheb's love for her graceful companion knew no bounds. She was so devoted that she decreed her gazelle would receive royal treatment, even in the afterlife! Picture this: a specially crafted sarcophagus adorned with exquisite designs fit for the noblest of Egyptians. Carved with intricate images of the gazelle, it was custom-made to cradle its mummified form with utmost dignity.
But why stop there? Like her fellow Egyptians, Isiemkheb believed in a lavish afterlife for her beloved pets. They would go to the Field of Reeds, frolicking in eternal bliss. To ensure they wouldn't be separated, the queen surrounded her gazelle's resting place with precious jewels and amulets gleaming with promises of everlasting companionship.
Now, let's not forget the menagerie of pets that graced ancient Egyptian households! From cats reigning supreme to dogs standing guard and even baboons, monkeys, falcons, and the occasional mongoose or hippo, their homes were a veritable zoo. Cats held a prestigious status, with dire consequences for anyone foolish enough to harm them—death, no less!
And when a beloved pet passed, the grief was palpable. Egyptians would shed tears and their hair, including eyebrows, as a sign of mourning.
Oh, the lengths Egyptians would go for their furry, feathery, and scaly companions—truly a testament to their boundless love and reverence for all creatures, great and small.
The legendary antics of Emperor Caligula! Despite his reputation for cruelty and tantrums rivalling a toddler's, even he had a soft spot—albeit a rather extravagant—for a particular equine companion.
Enter Incitatus, the Spanish racehorse who became Caligula's pride and joy. This horse lived a life of luxury that would make even the most pampered celebrities blush. Picture this: a marble stable fit for a king (or, in this case, an emperor's favourite horse), a bejewelled collar that would make the Crown Jewels jealous, and a diet complete with gold-flaked oats because, well, why not?
But wait, there's more! Caligula didn't just stop at decking out his steed in bling. Oh no, he went full-on political with it. By adorning Incitatus with a saddle sporting a red border, reminiscent of the robes worn by Rome's top dogs, Caligula essentially promoted his horse to ministerial status. Move over, senators; there's a new elite member in town!
Incitatus didn't just sit pretty; he embraced his newfound role with gusto. Dinner parties? Check. Entourage of servants? Double check. This horse lived the high life, hobnobbing with Roman society's crème de la crème like a seasoned diplomat.
Alas, as with many tales of excess, this one turns dark. Caligula's fickle temper eventually turned on poor Incitatus, and the horse found himself on the wrong end of the emperor's wrath, losing his head—literally.
Oh, Caligula, you indeed were the ultimate drama llama of ancient Rome!
James Bonds huvudfiende Ernst Stavro Blofeld, head of the global criminal organisation SPECTRE, hade en white blue-eyed Turkish Angora or Persian cat som han ständigt kliade bakom örat. Katten såg inte snäll ut. Minst lika elak som hajarna i Thunderball.
Let's dive into the rich tapestry of human-animal relationships throughout history with a dash of drama and intrigue!
In ancient annals, animals weren't just bystanders but essential players in the human saga. From the hunter's primal dance with his prey to the regal bonds forged between kings and their four-legged companions, the story unfolds with tales of reverence, companionship, and even a hint of scandal.
Picture the dawn of civilisation, where early humans stalked the wilderness as hunter-gatherers, viewing animals through the lens of survival—be it for sustenance or warmth. But then, a pivotal moment in history emerged: the taming of the wolf, which birthed the noble lineage of domesticated dogs. It was a bond forged in the fires of loyalty and obedience, a testament to humanity's ability to bend nature to its will.
As civilisations flourished, so did the intricate dance between man and beast. From the grandeur of ancient Egyptian pharaohs entwined with their loyal companions to the feline sentinels prowling the grain stores of the Fertile Crescent, animals rose from mere servants to esteemed comrades, their paws leaving indelible marks on the sands of time.
Yet, amidst the luxury of royal courts and noble estates, a shadow lurked—the dark spectre of prejudice. With its wary eye cast upon the bonds of man and beast, the Christian church whispered warnings of pagan worship and frowned upon the indulgence of pets. The spectre grew bolder still during the Inquisition, where accusations of witchcraft often hinged on the possession of animal familiars, symbols of dark forces and sinister deeds.
But fear not, for even in the darkest times, the light of companionship shines through. As the witch trials faded into history's rearview mirror, so did the stigma surrounding pet ownership. In a world teetering on the brink of change, where Victorian sensibilities clashed with the call of the wild, pets emerged as beacons of hope and symbols of humanity's ever-evolving relationship with the natural world.
Fast-forward to today, where dogs strut the streets as status symbols, companions, and even lifesavers. From the rare breeds that whisper secrets of wealth and prestige to the humble mutts that warm the hearts of everyday folk, pets have become more than just furry friends; they're confidants, healers, and guardians of the soul.
So, let us raise a toast to Fido, the faithful companion of Abraham Lincoln, and to all the creatures, great and small, who have woven themselves into the fabric of our lives. We find solace, joy, and the unspoken promise of a bond transcending time in their presence.
And as the hippopotamus frolics once more in the Zoological Gardens, let us remember that amidst the world's chaos, the love between man and beast endures as an eternal flame, lighting the path to a brighter tomorrow.

Lite om bilder och mig. Translation in English at the end.

A bit about pictures and me.
I'm a curious person who sees everything in pictures, even what I express in words, often combining them, for behind all my pictures lies a story. These narratives, some as short as a single image and others as long as a novel, are the heart and soul of my work.
Pictures tell stories. Wherever I go, I'm surrounded by natural beauty, exciting people, and history. I use my camera to document the world and blend what I see with what I feel to capture the hidden magic.
My images tell my stories. Through my pictures, prints, and narratives, I invite you to partake in these stories in your life and home and share my deeply personal perspective of our world. More than meets the eye. I think in pictures, dream, write, and talk about them; consequently, I must create images too. They become what I see, not necessarily confined to reality. There's a picture around every corner. I hope you'll see what I saw and enjoy it.
I'm also a writer, and many images come with a shorter or longer essay. It accompanies the painting, printed on fine paper with my personal greeting.
Many pictures start their journey on my camera. Simply put, I describe the image I see in my mind, experienced or imagined. The image arises within me even before I bring the eyepiece to my eye. In a fraction of a moment, I see what I want and what can be done with the picture. Here, I'll insert a giraffe, Superman, the Titanic, or whatever my imagination conjures up. Even stranger is that I remember the mental image long after it's time to create the work. Whether I succeed is up to the observer, often imbued with a streak of black humour – the aim is to entertain. My pictures usually become a talking point wherever they hang.
I prefer pictures that convey a message in multiple layers. At first glance, they're filled with feel-good vibes, a beautiful view, lovely weather, the sun shining, flowers in the meadow, or the water lying deceptively calm. But beneath this surface beauty, I often conceal a deeper story, a narrative that challenges societal norms or explores the human condition. I invite you to delve into these hidden narratives and discover the layers of meaning within my work.
Picture and design have been a thread running through my life. Photographic art feels like a fitting finale, and I'm happy to share it.
My genre is varied, as seen in my pictures; the theme is a blend of pop and street art in collages that can consist of hundreds of layers. Some images can take weeks, others just a day before it's time to hand over the result to the print workshop. Fine Art Prints are digital photo collages. In these collages, tearing, cutting, puzzling, painting, drawing, and spraying happen digitally. What I insert can be images hundreds of years old that I carefully extract so they appear to be part of the painting, but also images created by myself, now also generated from my imagination. Next, visit the print studio and, for certain images, number a limited edition (usually 7 copies) and sign them by hand. Some images may be available in other formats. Just ask which ones. If you like an image that's 70x100 but doesn't have space on the wall, you might be able to get it in 50x70 cm instead. The question is open.
The Giclée method, or Fine Art Print as it's also called, is the modern way of producing graphic art. This method ensures the highest quality and longevity of the artwork, using a high-quality large-format printer with archival pigment inks and artist paper or, in some cases, canvas. The paper used meets the longevity requirements set by museums and galleries. I sell my pictures unframed, allowing the new owner to personalise their artwork, confident in the lasting value and quality of the piece.
For many years, I only exhibited online, in selected groups, and on my Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/jorgen.thornberg.9. I also have my website, which unfortunately is not constantly updated - https://www.jth.life/. You can also read some of the stories accompanying the pictures there.
