THE MOUNTAIN AND THE WHIRLWIND
Mountains and weather have always fascinated me. Mountains ground me. They offer perspective. They are a playground, yet command respect. A world within the world.
And the weather simply is what it is. You can read as many forecasts as you like, but in the end, the weather will always become whatever it becomes.
I love snowstorms, pouring rain and whirlwinds. And I love being out in the middle of them. Somehow, it makes me feel extra alive, as long as I have the privilege of being able to seek shelter when I need to.
But when the forces of weather are intensified and altered by climate change, I feel something very different. Sadness, more than anything.
Here too, I hope my painting can make its own small contribution. By reminding us of the primal force of nature, and how precious a thriving planet really is.

Welcome to a world of nature, inner landscapes and glimmers.
Nina Johansson is a Swedish artist and freeride painter; painting the way she skiis. Nina is based in the Stockholm archipelago. Her layered mixed-media paintings move between abstraction and recognition, drawing on mountains, forests, water and organic forms as both outer and inner landscapes. Sometimes Mademoiselle Montagne shows up.
Nina approaches painting much as she approaches freeride skiing: with curiosity, presence and a willingness to read the terrain rather than follow a fixed route. Layers are built, erased, revealed and redirected. Forms emerge, dissolve and sometimes become something entirely unexpected.
Her work is rooted in contrasts she returns to again and again: stillness and movement, freedom and belonging, the wild and the grounded, strength and vulnerability (not the opposite though).
Gold, pink and unexpected flashes of colour carry something else through the work:; wonder. Awe. Nina is drawn to glimmers, those fleeting micro moments when light, nature, colour or movement suddenly sharpen our sense of being alive.
For her, nature is not simply a subject to paint. It is a place of perspective, the feelings of freedom, grounding and connection. Paintings where nature meets the inner landscape.
Art for a life full of wonder. And vice versa.
A wonderful life with all its ups and down. A mindset. A heartbeat. A northern star.
