Mirlind Jakupi
Self portrait, 2026
Annan
30 x 42 cm
Graphite pencil on paper.
In this drawing, I take as my starting point the classical Renaissance aesthetics, more specifically Caravaggio's masterpiece "The Boy with a Basket of Fruit", but move the motif into a contemporary and existential context.
The work, titled "Soon I wither", depicts a self-portrait of the artist in underwear holding a bouquet of flowers. The work explores a dilemma: that we humans are creatures on earth who carry the awareness of our own mortality.
The drawing serves as a reminder of the temporality of our relationship to the world. Just as the flowers wither, our time here is borrowed.
