I see a person standing, speechless after hearing these words spoken by the woman in the painting. The woman has turned her head directly afterwards and is not looking at anything in particular. She is specifically not looking at the person standing. That person could easily be the person looking at the painting, which is slightly intimidating since the woman's head is much larger than in real life. The person is standing, thinking "What did I say that was wrong?", searching for some way to win back the attention of the woman, but realising that her statement is not a discussion point. Her earring seems to hang slightly unnaturally, but the painting actually catches her in mid-turn, with her earring swinging out.

I studied illustration at the Edinburgh College of Art, where I developed a deep foundation in both traditional technique and creative expression. In 1998, I relocated to Sweden, where my artistic career was more of a hobby under the name Gareth B. Rychter.
The birth of my son prompted a powerful shift in focus. Choosing to prioritise fatherhood, I stepped away from the art world to embrace that chapter of life fully.
Now, in 2025, I return to the canvas with renewed energy and clarity, working under the name Gareth A. Rychter. My current practice explores two distinct yet complementary styles: one rooted in the immediacy and spontaneity of observational sketchbook work, the other in the precision and stillness of photo-realism. Together, these approaches reflect a lifelong engagement with both the fleeting moment and the carefully constructed image.
