We are "Dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants".
Nanos gigantum humeris insidentes in latin.

This metaphor, attributed to Bernard of Chartres, a 12th-century master, quickly came to mind when I conceived the idea of representing the importance of artistic and cultural heritage in the development of humankind.”

Thus, to see far, we need the perspective of our ancestors: the legacy of scholars, great thinkers, artists, architects, and writers allows us to better understand the world. It is in this sense that the past is necessary for the future, because knowledge is cumulative.

We can consider ourselves small, “dwarfs,” but that thanks to ancestral knowledge, we have the capacity to grow, allowing our vision to reach even further, standing on the shoulders of these “giants” who support us.
Details of the different elements that compose the sculpture:

The base represents books, stacked one on top of the other, because they are a tangible symbol and a means of transmitting the past.

The small figure (dwarf) at the top of the giants' heads has a real face, unlike the other little climbers. For after his arduous climb, he possesses the knowledge and wisdom that enlighten us.

First Giant
In this work, there is a genuine desire to evoke the Greco-Roman mythological imprint in the features of the old bearded giant. For what would we be without mythology? Would culture have this face today if great artists had not always drawn upon myths? It is unimaginable to strip art of its Greek and Roman gods. As a testament to respect and gratitude, my character is inspired by this mental image, with my own modern touch.
The second Giant
is a man, who could just as easily represent the scholar, the statesman, the architect, the artist, the composer, the poet, the builder, the musician, the thinker, the athlete, the painter, etc., but also the unsung hero, the man who helps make his future a legacy for future generations and his past a story to be told.
Finally, a woman for my last Giant, because they are often the forgotten ones of museums. Sometimes artists, other times muses, then great surgeons, poets, professors, scientists, sculptors... simply capable women.
And who, like Camille Claudel, were sometimes hated, vilified, banished, for their art and for the audacity they had in facing judgment.
But also because they are wives, daughters and mothers, without whom man has neither a future nor a past.

Moon Billard

Moon Billard

Paris

A figurative and conceptual french sculptor trained at the Lille School of Fine Arts, Moon works with clay in various ways, most often from life.

She finds inspiration in the great Italian and French masters, such as Bernini, Rodin, and Carpeaux, as well as in her reading and her passion for literature, having taught French for many years.

Her sculpture is often described as delicate, refined, and complex, poised between heritage and modernity. Endowed with a distinctive, dreamlike style, her work reflects the mysteries and vulnerabilities of the soul.

Her perspective as a female artist blends beauty and anger, sensuality and suffering.

Artistic Approach

Art is a deep breath.

For Moon, sculpture is profoundly intimate, inspired by creative meditation.
The importance of mindfulness in the creative process and artistic practice allows her to create works that are both aesthetically pleasing and full of meaning.
This return to oneself is experienced as an enrichment and a natural artistic source, culminating in the creation of original works, made with raw emotion and heart.
Through the evocative power of clay, the artist brings to the surface the depths of the soul. She also addresses current events that resonate with her and transport her mind to profound reflections, which she shares through sculpture.
