Helena Smeds is a contemporary Swedish artist whose abstract painting explores the interplay between nature's structures, light, movement, depth and human perception and experiences. Her work operates in the borderland between the organic and the cosmic, where layers of colour, built-up structures, and forms create space for both presence and interpretation.
With a background in psychology and research in bilingualism (PhD), one might assume she approaches the creative process with analytical precision, but her artistic practice is rather rooted in "flow" and intuition. The process is exploratory, experimental, and spontaneous, where the material's own dynamics in interaction with creativity and gut feeling allow each painting to emerge both naturally and surprisingly.
The rhythms of nature, oceans, light phenomena, the universe, and organic forms recur as visual references, yet without being depicted literally. Instead, Helena seeks to create pictorial spaces where the viewer can experience depth, movement, and transformation. Her paintings offer no finished narratives but invite a personal encounter, where each viewer may discover their own connections, experiences, and reflections.
Layers of colour are built up successively, creating spatiality, rhythm, and depth, where light becomes an active part of the image's structure. The result are paitings that change depending on lighting conditions, the viewer's distance, movement, and attention.
Under the collective name Windows to the Soul of the Universe, Helena Smeds develops a cohesive body of work where each painting forms part of a greater whole. The theme explores the relationship between humans and patterns that recur in our inner and outer nature, from the microscopic to the cosmic. The viewer is invited to pause and discover the connections that arise within themselves in the encounter with the painting.
Helena Smeds has exhibited her paintings on multiple occasions, both on solo and group exhibitions in Sweden, for example at NK Stockholm together with Artist Arena. Her art has also been presented in international exhibitions and curator-led projects focusing on contemporary abstract painting, including in Rome and L'Aquila in Italy. In December 2026 she will be presented in the contemporary art catalogue "The form of the invisible: art as revelation and cure for the world" curated by Monica Ferrarini and Alice Di Piero.
