David Powell
HAGERSTEN
Painting and drawing are two of the most intimate forms of artistic expression. Using pencil, paintbrush, and pigment requires a close relationship between our thoughts, the hand, brush, paper, subject, and eye. Sometimes I try to paint loosely and sometimes to find detail depending upon the subject. I have tried to capture with these sketches a sense of definite place but also a sense of absence. I wish to capture the specific meaning or atmosphere, but also to convey the sense of someone or something missing. The need to touch, hold, and reconnect is implied in the artist's touch, the tangible textures and materials.
These are frequent emotions and attitudes that most people, if not all of us, have felt. We anticipate the return of our loved ones or that we can return to our special places with anticipation, if not anxiety.
