Göbekli Tepe, 2022
Akryl
60 x 80 x 2 cm
Built approximately 11 600 years ago in Turkey, Göbekli Tepe is believed to be the oldest and largest temple complex in human history.
Göbekli Tepe is composed of a series of megalithic structures that predate Stonehenge by 6500 years, the Egyptian pyramids by 7000 years and the beginning of agriculture.
The megaliths at this site stand approx 5.5 meters in height and weigh as much as 45 tons. Some of the structures are decorated with carved depictions of animals and sacred symbolism indicating the cultural memory and world which existed 11 600 years ago.
The very existence of this ancient temple complex poses a serious challenge to the conventional view of early civilisation and history as we know it.
As of 2021, less than 5% of the entire site has been excavated.
