Elen Alien believes that art is magic, a way to make ordinary objects like leaves become miraculous ones, and oppositely. She thinks that our world has a dual structure - physical and metaphysical components. To emphasize this vision in the project she created finished products having an element of life on their own represented in natural leaves. "Weeping willow" is the triptych created from weeping willow's fallen leaves collected in Denmark in 2020. In the project, the artist investigates fading plants’ decorative and symbolic properties, their intertextuality, transformative qualities, energy, and mood. She followed the natural shape of leaves to connect them together on a circular wooden panel, she didn't cut or dye them. Initially, the leaves had a silver shade and reminded a silver shield or amulet, but after the resining, they turned out copper. It was not possible to find the material meaning in her own culture and time, that's why the artist referred to non-obvious sources. She found out that the ancient Chinese believed that willow branches would ward off evil spirits and they were often carried or placed over doorways to keep those spirits away. The work resembles three copper shields, two of them have eyes looking at the viewer from the darkness to enhance the feeling that the artwork is alive and to place the observer in the same position as the object to underline that we all are parts of one big organism, and no one is more important following the ideas of popular nowadays "object-oriented ontology" ideas. Elen Alien lets the viewers decide what they need protection from, while they are meditatively watching the natural pattern of forever preserved leaves forming the shield because she believes that our force is already inside us, we just need to pay attention to it, while the art is a right instrument.

London
Elen Alien (b. 1990, Ukraine) is a staunch cosmopolitan. In her works, she combines elements of different times and cultural communities, thus pointing to the absence of the need for separation, and labeling, to the fact that together all people and nature form a common organism. The art of Elen Alien expresses the unity of the sacred, natural and aesthetic, in their striving for a common goal. Her research unfolds at the points of contact between nature and humans, again addressing questions that people have tried in vain for centuries to find answers to with the help of science and technology. In her artistic practice, the artist tries to "preserve forever" the elusive beauty of the moment. Combining the tenderness of flowers and the hardness of epoxy resin, she reveals the ambivalence of glorifying the beauty of imperfection and contrasts art with digital immortality.
