Hi, my name is Mohsen Salehi and I thought it would be nice if I shared a little bit of my background. I am currently living in Umeå, Sweden and have been for the better part of 2 years. I came to Sweden in late 2015 from Iran. I was living under very hard conditions in Tehran and I could no longer manage to live under the everyday persecution I was felt I was living in. So I began my journey, travelling north through Turkey, then southern to northern Europe to Sweden. Enduring the realities of this well worn path helped me develop a sharper sense of who and what I am supposed to become.
I am settled in many senses of the word now in Sweden and this rooting has allowed me to begin to tempt new ideas and techniques that i had previously been unable to unearth. This helps me keep in tune on both my perspective with my median and my physical life as the growth that gets documented with each painting also reflects those changes daily. These adaptations also bring me closer in touch with my old roots that are steeped in Afghani soul and traditions. I have always wished for my life to represent my proud history and now wish that history is translated into my paintings and continues to allow me to grow and close the gaps of fear that are existing in all our societies today whether in Sweden, Iran, Afghanistan- by connecting to people through art and life.
Here are my paintings which I have painted in realistic style using watercolor. The common element featured through out is nature but I usually paint everything and all themes. The inspirations I use are often photographs that I use as a model and paint. My interpretation of that photograph allows me to make changes from the original. Sometimes I add some elements and other times I remove some objects in order to embelish the stories or give a better composition of my paintings.
I use main techniques - wet on wet, wet on dry, dry on dry and dry on wet- and also some techniques which I have uncovered and adapted after many years of studying watercolor. Some techniques that I have learned come from the works of world-known watercolorists like: Alvaro Castagnet, Joseph Zbukvic, Joe W Dowden etc. By the way, watercolor is a true reflection of me as well because watercolor is not controllable hundred percent, I mean, sometimes especially in wet on wet technique, watercolor paints itself and I can just watch it. We both paint together and I am not alone.
